More midsize cars are sold in America than any other type of vehicle, and nearly every mainstream car company offers one. This buying guide summarizes key details and ratings for the 10 most popular* midsize cars available for sale in America today. If nothing on this top-10 list looks appealing, consumers can also consider the Buick Regal, Chevrolet Volt, Chrysler 200, Mazda 6, Nissan Leaf, Subaru Legacy, and Volkswagen CC. There are most popular midsize cars: Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, Nissan Altima, Hyundai Sonata, Chevrolet Malibu, Toyota Prius, Kia Optima, Volkswagen Passat, and Dodge Avenger.

The three top-selling cars—Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and NissanAltima—are all members of this segment. Four-cylinder and V6 gas engines dominate, but there are also six models that offer a hybrid and one that’s available with a diesel. A midsize car is the North American standard for an automobile with a size equal to or greater than that of a compact. It several of the cars available in hybrid form, it’s hard to call any of them “out of the ordinary.” But the Ford C-MAX and Toyota Prius v are the only wagons in the hybrid group, so maybe those qualify. At the moment, the Volkswagen Passat claims the only diesel-engine offering in the class.

The Mazda 6 was slated to get a diesel for the 2015 model year, but development delays have pushed back its introduction. Subaru’s Legacy sedan and Outback wagon, the Ford Fusion, and the Honda Crosstour offer all-wheel drive. The Honda Accord offers the class’s lone coupe body style. Also, the Mazda 5 is a cross between a midsize car and a minivan (and we’ve had some heated debates over which it should be called), and it’s the only vehicle in this class to offer 6-passenger seating, three rows of seats, and sliding side doors. (If that makes it sound an awful lot like a minivan, note that most minivans offer seating for seven or eight and far more cargo space.)
